Sherwood Park is located to the east of Edmonton proper, with most of its residential area situated between Anthony Henday Drive and Highway 21. The central route through Sherwood Park is Baseline Road, which connects central Sherwood Park to downtown Edmonton in less than 20 minutes, or approximately 14 kilometres. West of Anthony Drive is the area known as Refinery Row, consisting mostly of light-industrial and commercial development. The main transit route through Sherwood Park is the Trans-Canada Highway 16. Sherwood Park is part of the large Strathcona County, a vast area of almost 1,200 square kilometres in size. The area is mostly rural, incorporating various farms, fields, wooded areas, and lakes. Just beyond the eastern Boundary of Strathcona County is Elk Island National Park. Having been developed from the 1950s up to the present day, Sherwood Park includes a mix of mid-century suburban homes, 80s and 90s new-traditional homes, and sleek modern new-builds. The largest of Sherwood Park's homes feature 7 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms, spread out on a little over 3000 square feet of floor space. Many of these spacious and luxurious homes are located in the southern boundary area of Sherwood Park, where the denser developments open up into semi-rural country. However, most homes in Sherwood Park fall between 1500 and 2500 square feet in size and are situated along winding streets and cul de sacs, with long lots and private detached parking garages in the rear. Older homes in Sherwood Park display class suburban ranch or bungalow styles, including split level designs with vinyl siding over brickwork. Later homes incorporate traditional elements like more steeply pitched roofs, cornice returns, and more ornate and bay windows. The newest homes in Sherwood Park have sleek and simple shapes, consisting of squares, rectangles, and shed-style roof lines. Many of these employ a variety of textures and exterior finishes, from slate, to stone, to cedar. Near the centre of Sherwood Park is Broadmoor Lake Park. This complex includes many facilities and amenities, like an ice rink and hockey arena, gymnastics club, Festival Place, library, public golf course and tennis club, and athletic park. All of this is built around the scenic Broadmoor Lake. Sherwood Park falls within the Elk Island Public Schools district. The two main high schools in the area are Bev Facey Community High School and, Salisbury Composite High School. Sherwood Park mall is situated centrally along Sherwood Drive and contains a cinema, Safeway, banks, restaurants, and other stores. Sherwood Park is also home to many other large and well-appointed parks besides Broadmoor Lake.
